THE DEVELOPMENT OF A REFRIGERATION SYSTEM TO ENABLE MINING AT DEPTHS 3,500 AND 4,000 METERS BELOW SURFACE.

Summary

THE IDEA WAS TO COMBINE THE BEST TECHNOLOGIES TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE THE MOST EFFICIENT AND RELIABLE REFRIGERATION SYSTEM. FOUR IMPORTANTSYSTEMS WERE EVALUATED NAMELY, AN AMMONIA SYSTEM, VERTICAL HYDROHOIST WITH 277 K (4 DEG C) WATER, VERTICAL HYDROHOIST WITH ICE AND A PUMP AND ENERGY RECOVERY SYSTEM WITH 273.5 K (0.5 DEG C) WATER. THE DESIGN PARAMETERS WERE THE FOLLOWING: A HEAT LOAD OF 78 MEGAWATTS WITH A MAXIMUM ROCK TEMPERATURE OF 339 K (66 DEG C) AND THE PHILOSOPHY OF TOTAL AIR CONDITIONING.
