Number: pap. 31

Summary

Industrial plants, which use cryogenic process, like plants for H-D-T distillation, have high hazards. Therefore, it is important to strengthen all the required safety measures, starting from materials, with high tenacity in order to assure safety in working and low diffusion and permeation properties, in order to avoid tritium implant into the crystalline structure, and finishing with the technical procedures and manuals for a correct installation and operation of cryogenic facilities. The distillation systems components must comply with the followings rules: to use reliable cryogenic sources; to have proper cold-boxes who shelter the columns, in order to decrease the environmental thermal influences; to have for the columns, condensers with smooth dropping, re-boilers with
steady controllable boiling, internals solutions with higher separation factor; to have low mass and high thermal capacity heat exchangers.
