Summary

Sport is one of the important and necessary activates in humans' life from the health and recreational side. Sports places have become well-known and spread all over the world. One of these places is called the gymnasium. Many persons frequent it for different purposes of physical and health aspects. It is so important for gymnasium to be air-conditioned in order to create suitable environmental conditions, which provide thermal comfort, maintain health and lead to high performance for persons. In this paper, numerical investigations were performed to study the flow patterns and thermal comfort in an air-conditioned gymnasium located in Cairo city, Egypt. The CFD software (FLUENT 15) was used in this paper to make reasonable predictions of air distributions inside the gymnasium. The gymnasium is air-conditioned by commercial ceiling type 4-way cassette air conditioner units. Three cases have been investigated by changing the discharge angle of the air conditioner. In addition, the effects of occupants, lighting, and electrical sports machines on the room airflow were considered. The main task in this paper is to obtain the best thermal comfort conditions for persons inside the gymnasium by changing the discharge angle of the ceiling type 4-way cassette air conditioner. The airflow pattern of each case has been analyzed in terms of temperatures, velocities, relative humidity, and predicted mean vote (PMV) distribution through comparison. It was concluded that the discharge angle of ceiling type 4-way cassette air conditioner (40o) is the best design among these studied cases.
