President of Commission: Dr Ales Srnka (Czech Republic)
With a PhD from the Brno University of Technology (1988), Dr Ales Srnka has worked in the field of low temperature physics at the Institute of Scientific Instruments (ISI) of the Czech Academy of Sciences since 1978.
His initial research focused on the design of superconducting magnets for physical experiments, especially for the NMR spectrometers. Interested in the design and development of the cryogenic systems with low losses of the cryogenic liquids, low temperature thermometry and cryogenic safety have also been an important part of his work. Today, his activities include radiative heat transfer at cryogenic temperatures, characteristic of materials at low temperatures and design of special devices for cryogenic measurements.
Moreover, Dr Srnka completed study stays at the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia and at the Southampton University, UK.
Since 1991, he has been the Head of the Cryogenics and Superconductivity Group of the ISI and Deputy Head of the MR and Cryogenics Department of the ISI since 2003. He has been a member of the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN (project NA58) since 2003 and was formerly the Vice-President of Commission A1 Cryophysics, Cryoengineering from 2008, before being appointed President.
