Résumé

Concerns over climate change are sparking renewed interest in all sorts of strategies to reduce the generation of greenhouse gases. A significant part of the dialogue is directed to new sources of energy that will replace the burning of fossil fuels. However, these technologies may take several decades to scale to large enough capacities to be meaningful. In the interim, quicker fixes are needed. Some discussion is emerging that such a quicker fix is to vigorously direct effort at the energy efficiencies of existing buildings to reduce electric energy demand. It has been said:"The energy that you do not use is the cheapest energy". Our nominee for an important energy efficiency practice, which is certainly not in the forefront of discussions that we have seen and which appears to constitute 'high-hanging' and as yet unpicked fruit on the energy efficiency tree, is described below.
