Deux grands réfrigérateurs à hélium de 18 kW (puissance équivalente à 4,5 K) pour le projet LHC du CERN fourni par Air Liquide.

Two large 18 kW (equivalent capacity of 4.5 K) helium refrigerators for CERN's LHC project provided by Air Liquide.

Résumé

CERN in Switzerland has decided to build a new accelerator project called LHC (Large Hadron Collider). This 27-km long accelerator will operate superconducting magnets and radiofrequency cavities, for the first time on such a large scale. For that purpose, Air Liquide is now building two custom designed refrigerators of cryogenic power 18 kW equivalent at 4.5 kW. The thermodynamic cycle, chosen to fit the LHC cryogenic loads with a very high efficiency, is discussed. A special emphasis is placed on the cold end that makes use of a cryogenic expansion turbine discharging into the double phase domain. As these refrigerators are designed to be able to be operated at reduced cryogenic capacity with reduced electrical power consumption, the solutions adopted in order to adapt the refrigerator to operation under reduced load are described.
