Résumé

Chilled beams are known for their good thermal comfort performance. Comfort predictions are essential to evaluate new system designs. As such, this paper deals with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations to examine thermal comfort parameters such as local air velocity and draught rate. A mock-up was built at the Grada International lab to validate these comfort computations. Here, special attention went to the comparison of measured and computed air velocity. The mean velocity field predicted by CFD simulations indeed differs from the mean (in time) magnitude of the velocity, i.e. the mean speed, as typically measured by low velocity, omnidirectional thermal anemometers. After converting the computed velocities, it could be concluded that CFD is a reliable tool for thermal comfort predictions.
