Résumé

Advancements in technology have enabled the continuous improvements of turbo machinery in the HVACR industry during the past century. The first centrifugal refrigeration compressor, introduced in 1922 was an open-drive, four stage 60 Hz horizontal-split machine with riveted two-dimensional impellers compressing a very low-density refrigerant. This paper will highlight some of the major technical developments that over time have transformed this first turbo compressor into the current state-of-the-art high-speed, direct-drive, oil-free centrifugal compressor designed for ozone-depletion-free, low-GWP refrigerants. Turbo machinery developments that allowed throttle-loss recovery using bi-phase impulse turbines and the recent introduction of spin-off Organic Rankine Cycle turbines will also be mentioned. The presentation will end with a look at some potential future turbo compression technologies such as shock wave compression and miniature turbo machinery.
